I woke up this morning and saw a juicy 200/400 NL game going on on Stars so I jumped in.  I ended up playing for 4 hours and made something like 15k and the game broke just in time for me to check out of my hotel.  I went over to Dean’s place and we played some racquetball.  Dean had been talking about how he’s gotten really good and will beat me and I trounced him 15-2.  When I was up 11-2 I gave dean 15:1 on a hundred that I’d win and I won, so the next game I gave dean 3:1 on 500.  I think he was sharking me because his serve suddenly got a lot better and he was up by a 8-6 at one point but I ended up beating him 15-8. And then it was time to leave Chicago.  All in all, the trip was a mixed bag: I had fun at the Dodgers games with my cousin and some friends but the Dodgers got swept.  I also played a lot of poker only to end up stuck 30k on the trip (despite winning 35 on my own action) and I think I would have preferred to stay in New York and see my brother who flew into town the day I left.  But oh well, I’m in Vegas now and I’m insanely excited.

When I got to our place in Vegas I was stunned to see how huge it is.  We’ve basically rented the ideal party house.  We have a hot tub, a swimming pool, a pool table, a ping-pong table, an outdoor volleybal court, a foosball table, a 3-hole putting green, a horsehoe pit, a weight-room, and a basketball hoop.  The house is so big that I swear you could get lost walking around.  In addition, we rented a CLK Mercedes-Benz convertible and a Navigator.

Anyway, Team Israel is ready to take the WSOP by storm. Ansky, Emil, Krantz, Jonas (riverboatking), and I all went to register for tomorrow’s 10k PLHE event.  Jonas had the beautiful idea that we should prop bet 1k on who has the higher table number and who has the higher seat number at his respective table and I won on the former (table 28 to his 26) and we chopped on the latter (both had seat 9) .  This tilted Jonas and he then demanded that I bet him 1k a pop on odds or evens on the rest of Team Israel’s table and seat numbers (I got odds).  Next thing you know I was up 7k on him and he’s tilting like the little tilt monkey he is, so he and I had a running bet where I got odds and he had to go ask everybody as they were registering to show him their seat and table #s.  After he basically embarrassed himself accosting strangers I ended up only winning 5k off of him.  It’s now 2:30 Vegas time (4:30 a.m. Chicago time) and I have to be up at 9:00 to work out and make a Deucescracked video that’s gotta be finished by noon.  I should probably get some sleep for the tournament I’ll be playing all day tomorrow, but obviously I’m about to go play Jonas in some $100/point Chinese poker for an hour or so.

The last couple of days I have lost 65k taking pieces of friends. It really sucked and I was really pissed, not at my friends but just that my last week of work was down the drain in one fell swoop. When you take pieces of friends you just have to be willing to swallow some losses and not get mad (unless you see some obvious bad play but that wasn’t really the case with a couple of possible exceptions, but again nothing egregious). But yeah I was in a bad mood. Then I woke up today at 8:30 a.m. (I don’t know why but lately I’m just automatically waking up extremely early regardless of when I went to bed) with nothing to do so I loaded up a session. 45 minutes in I was down 17k from running like death (KK vs AA twice within 5 minutes of each other at 25/50, set over setted for 3500 at 10/20, etc) so I was staring at a -83k 36 hour stretch.

As close to tilted as I got, I forced myself to keep playing. I loaded up tables on 4 different sites and at times was only playing 2 tables of 10/20. When it’s 9:30 a.m., you’re stuck 93k, and you’re playing 2 tables of 2k-buyin no-limit with only a few other full stacks, getting back to even is basically impossible. I’m proud of myself for managing to play pretty close to my A+ game, and after a workmanlike 8 hour session I ended up 20k. I clawed my way to being up 5k when this hand happened against samh:

So now I’m up 20k on the day, only down 40ish on the last couple of days, and off tilt. My few sessions in Chicago have been extremely swingy: the top image in this post is today’s session and the bottom one is my sessions since I came to Chicago.

On a side note, I went to the Cubs/Dodgers game last night with some high school friends and had a lot of fun. It was freezing out (like 40 degrees plus wind chill and I only had a hoodie) and the Dodgers lost, but I had a great time. Things are looking good on the job front (I’ve received some good indications from my friend who hooked me up with the job interview) and I’m psyched to go to Vegas tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll be updating the blog a lot more as the Vegas insanity starts.

So I’ve been playing a lot more poker and I’ve been experimenting with a lot of crazy lines lately.  Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t but I take a lot of pride in doing crazy stuff that a lot of people might not do.  Trying to bluff a guy off trips in blind vs blind, trying to bluff Ansky off top pair through chat ownage, check/raise-4bet bluffing Jimmie23 in a 25k HU tournament and bet/folding the turn.  I like to think that doing stuff like this gives me license to do a lot of creative stuff for value, and at the very least I know that I can always answer yes to “But seriously, could I ever be bluffing here?”  So enjoy these failures:

A friend from high school and I are both huge Dodgers fans, the Dodgers/Cubs series is this week in Wrigley, and Chicago is on the way to Vegas. So I’m in Chicago. I got in yesterday and met up with a friend from college for drinks, then woke up for brunch with my cousin today. She and I are really close because we have such a small immediate family (me, my brother, my parents, my aunt, and my cousin) so it was great to see her. We went to the day game at Wrigley, and it was amazing. I wasn’t as enthralled by the friendly confines as I thought I would be, but that’s partially because it was overcast and humid (Chicago weather is apparently awful regardless of the season). But it was a great game (2-1 for most of the game with a lot of chances for both teams to break the game open leading to a lot of suspense).

I played some poker yesterday and dropped 27k mainly at 25/50 (I actually crushed 10/20 yesterday). I was running really badly and didn’t really get tilted but considering that I’ve been kicking myself for my bustout from the 25k HU Tournament (I definitely think I misplayed my hand in hindsight although given the opponent it was only somewhat bad as opposed to the “absolutely awful” status I would give to my play against 95% of opponents). Anyway, today after the game I played for an hour or so and made back the 27k very quickly, and I am now up a whopping $1285 over my last 1700 hands. Short sessions + playing aggro monkey style=swongs.

I’m going to the next two Dodgers/Cubs games: one with my friend from high school and Dean tomorrow and then on Wednesday with a friend from Yale. I’ll have some sick hand histories to post (I’ve been doing some crazy stuff the last two days) but I’m in a bit of a rush right now because I have to go meet up with the legendary lapoker to watch the Celtics/Pistons games.

I busted on the bubble versus mischiefofmagic.  I got a great draw in my opinion as he’s obviously a weaker player than most of the ones I could have played, but he was playing pretty aggro, I lost one reraised pot, he check/raised me with 44 on 99T flush draw and I called with 33 and we checked it down, and then I stacked off with KdQd on a Q424 board when he check/called with a flush draw and check/raised the turn 4 that gave him a flush.  I thought he’d do this with a lot of Qx type hands and random pairs with a club so I jammed and he had the flush.  Oh well. At least I sat in front of a computer all day watching people play their long as hell matches so I could wait for the next round, only to immediately bust out against a guy who is by most accounts pretty bad.  Going to go get drunk and bed farewell to my NYC friends now.

I won round 2 vs jimmie23, who I definitely was unhappy to see matched up against me  (he’d come from behind to beat PeterJepsen, who’s way worse, and I was like “oh well, what are the chances it matters?” and immediately we sit in against each other).  I think jimmie’s a very good player but I don’t think he played particularly well today (then again, it is hard to say without seeing what cards he had to work with).  I think I know his game plan against me (don’t want to give anything away while still in the tournament, sorry) and I was ready for it.  And in fairness I did knock him out with a semi-bad beat (he check/called 268 two diamonds with 66 and led a 7d turn and I jammed 89 with one diamond and rivered a straight) in which he played his hand well and I probably made a slight mistake jamming the turn. I camtasia’d the match but don’t know if I’ll release it in video form before retiring because once I play a player who’s very good like jimmie and I will probably play again in the future I risk giving away too much with these videos.  We’ll see though.

Anyway, one win away from the money.   Jay and Emil are both in round 3 as well.  Good start for deucescracked imo

Krantz won his match vs gus hansen and Emil is looking good against Phil Ivey with a 4:1 chip lead.  Funny story is that while I was waiting for the HU tournament to load I got taken to a table with 8 other FTOPS avatars at the table.  I asked “wtf is this” and apparently it’s the FTOPS “Tournament of Champions freeroll”  I didn’t know that was actually something so I checked out the lobby and it said there are 71 players and only the winner wins the grand prize.  I asked what the grand prize is and a railbird says “a WSOP ME 10k Seat.”  While playing a 25k tournament I wasn’t exactly excited to play a tournament where I am almost guaranteed to get nothing from it, so I just open jammed every hand.  Now I’m chipleader and knocked out Alaei so I have some time to actually play, but once round 2 starts I’m going back to jamming every hand.

While I was typing this Emil just beat Ivey, so things are going well for Team Israel.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, but I’m a very important person doing a lot of important stuff these days. I had my 2nd round of my job interview on Thursday which I think went very well. Normally I’d be inclined to think my chances aren’t great because I’m trying to get a job in a very small investment team (4 people including myself hopefully) so my inexperience in finance should hurt me more than if I were applying for a less competitive position. But then again, my prospective boss knows I’m inexperienced and still invited me for a 2nd round and I think I have a better chance than it might have seemed at first.

In poker, I’ve made 50k at 25/50 and 10/20 in the last 2 days, probably over 2k hands. 2 days ago I played this guy HU on Stars 25/50 and got it in with K9o vs his ATs (no strategy advice, please) and won. Then 2 hands later I flopped the nuts with 67 on a 345 two diamond board and we got it all in. The turn and river both came 5s, so I was hoping to see diamonds and he did have 7dTd. 2 hands later I donk 7hJh on a 2h4h9d board, he raises with 9T, I jam all in and hit a flush. Next thing you know I’d taken 15k off the guy and had to leave to meet a friend from high school for dinner.

The luck continued the next day on Stars as I won the following all-ins: 88 vs AK, 88 vs AQ, AQs vs KK, QQ vs KTs, and my personal favorite: AKs vs Grimstarr’s AKs (I guess I’ve been running well with AKs vs AKs lately. Kind of assumed my FTOPS win depleted my luckbox but I guess not). I actually won 39k at 25/50 yesterday but I took a piece of Krantz at 200/400 and he lost a bit so I’m only up like 50k on the last two days.

As excited as I am for Vegas, I’m a bit sad that time’s running out for me in New York: I’m leaving for Chicago tomorrow en route to the WSOP. I went to a dinner party with some Yale friends so I got some of my goodbyes in there, but I’m definitely going to miss New York while I’m out in Vegas.

After the dinner party I headed over to Emil’s birthday party. He had a party at Apple Bar and it was a great mix of NYU friends and poker friends. Strasser, the Ocho, ezmogee, Ansky, Dean, fslexcduck, actualgod, luegofuego, and others were in attendance. Dean, flawless, Krantz, and I bought Emil these sick Prada shoes (pictured above).
emil

Anyway, I’m off to brunch with a high school friend and after that I’m going to be playing the 25k HU tournament. I’m obviously very excited (I sold off 17k worth of action, but it’s still 8k buy-in and a sick structured HU tournament, so I’m buying in more than I have for any tournament and it’s in my specialty, so I’m really looking forward to it). Wish me luck!

I had an interview this afternoon.  I was interviewing for a research assistant position for a 4-person investment team within a friend’s hedge fund.  The team is being started up by this young credit markets genius and I’d basically be doing a lot of work making sure the minutiae of all the trades are in order and doing a lot of the grunt work.  But at the same time I’d be in a small team with some very bright people and learning the ropes pretty quickly, so I’m definitely very excited about this opportunity.  Anyway, I heard back from my potential boss and we’re meeting again later this week to discuss the job in further detail, so that’s a good start.

I also played a short session today and won 10k at 10/20 and 25/50 so I’m now up 25k in 16k hands on the month (in addition to making good money buying pieces of friends and winning that FTOPS tournament).  I’ve been running pretty bad in cash games this month (22k below my all-in equity plus some cold-decks including 2 200BB set over sets at 25/50). I’m down a good amount at 10/20 HU which is normally my bread and butter but have made money at every other stakes.  Obviously being up 25k isn’t that bad and my FTOPS luck precludes me bitching about how I’m running for a couple weeks, but I just wanted to keep you guys posted on what’s up.

I’m also playing the 25k buy-in HU tournament next Saturday: I sold off 50% so far, might buy back some of that if I make 30k or more this week.  Either way I’m very excited to play that tournament and hope I get a good draw.

Finally, I’m flying out of New York on Sunday.  I’m swinging by Chicago to catch the Dodgers/Cubs series in Wrigley (my good friend from high school is also a huge Dodgers fan and Chicago’s on the way to Vegas, so given that I’ve never been to Wrigley I have to go).  After that it’s Vegas for the summer with Krantz, Whitelime, Flawless, Ansky, and Danzasmack.  I could not be more excited: everybody in the house is awesome at poker, awesome to hang out with, and we’re going to do a lot of amazing stuff (be on a reality t.v. show, go whitewater rafting in the Grand Canyon, rock climbing, etc) so it should be an amazing last hurrah before I (hopefully, job status permitting) enter the real world.

Fish sits down with 5k at 25/50. I take it off him. Then he rebuys for 10k. I’m like “sick, I’ll have all his money no problem.” Then this hand happens:

So next thing you know I’m playing this guy for 5 hours straight. It’s so boring because he’s limp folding most buttons, is totally passive, and chipping away at a guy by winning tons of small pots when you’re stuck a bunch to him (he went up 10k on me at his peak) is just mind-numbing. So yeah, nothing too exceptional about that hand, but the one with which I finished him off was really sweet in my opinion. He’d been reraising a fair amount all day (11% of hands from the BB) but defended against my frequent 4bets only 2 or 3 times, so this was a pretty easy 4 bet. I checked the flop for pot control. On the turn I don’t believe he’d value bet anything but a straight on two streets, but I just don’t see him calling a 4bet with a hand that has a 6 in it (I don’t think he reraises 66 in the first place and he definitely folds A6 to the 4bet) so he might have TJ but for the most part I just thought he’d have some AK/AQ or other broadway crap. I snap called the river for what it’s worth:

So I ended up winning 12k on the day (lost at 10/20 to a monster fish), not including  the 2500 I lost on the big FTOPs tournament (back-to-back FTOPS  wins would have been nice, but oh well)
