I was posting earlier about all the great feedback I”m getting or my “Moving on Up” series for Deucescracked.  I’ve been getting complimentary IMs and PMs from some pretty respected and good posters on 2plus2 that I wouldn’t expect to even be watching videos in the first place.  The feedback’s been amazing, and this PM today really made my morning.  Leaving the name out for obvious reasons, just wanted to let you guys know it means a lot to me when I get PMs like this one:

“FWF,

I feel compelled to write to thank you for your excellent series on DC. You are super-poker-smart and I really appreciate that you took the time to do it. There is no way DC can be paying you enough for you to profitably make these videos.

You also have a very easy, natural manner on the mike, I could see you doing on air commentary, not that that pays any better I would imagine.

Anyway, keep up the great videos please and thanks again for helping me think about poker in a much more powerful way.”

As for anybody who’s wondering what DC is, go to www.deucescracked.com (can click on the banner on my front page) and check it out.  I’m very confident in our product, I think we make the best poker videos on the web, and if you try the 7-day free trial you can see for yourself how useful our videos really are.

/blatant sales pitch

I played Yossarian at 100-200 NL today and quickly took 20k off him.  He left, came back a minute later, and then won a half-stack off me when I two-barreled as the preflop reraiser and he jammed.  He then insta-quit me.

A few hours later, he sat back in, apologized for leaving abruptly and explained he was on call.  I asked him what he does for a living and he immediately left, only to come back a half hour later.  At one point I was up over 50k on him (obviously having sold off action), but he came back and was only down a little.  We played 200-400 NL and I lost about 16k to him before he quit me, so I think I ended up the day up 4k (my cut of the profit).  I then lost it all to Whitelime playing $500/point Chinese Poker at his place.  So long day, lots of high stakes gambling, and I broke even.  I’d post hand histories but I don’t want Yossarian seeing what I had.  Needless to say, I’ll play him until he quits me every time he sits in versus me as I think I’ve got a huge edge versus him.

I played Ziigmund at 100/200 this morning while hung over and won 23k off of him.  When I play that high I sell off action so I sent an email to Kranz, Whitelime, and Dean that I was giving them each a piece.  Dean hits me up on G-chat after I stack Ziigmund and I decide it would be hysterical for Dean and I to pretend I got smoked and lost 80k so that when Krantz and Whitelime woke up they’d think they lost 20k.

So I sent the following email out to the 3 of them, with doctored hand histories.  It’s not easy to basically rewrite entire parts of the hand histories because you have to get all the little stuff right (like ***RIVER*** [3s 7d 8h] [7s] [Ah] and “So and so showed [xx] and won ($xx,xxx.xx) with three of a kind, Aces).  Anyway, here was the email I sent (subject: well that could have went better):

” i got fucking smoked.  jesus.  here are some HH’s, I think I played them fine, he’d been so aggressive.

his 1st 3bet of the match, maybe 8 hands in.

civil like “so i’ll only pay 15%”

i’ll respond like “well i wouldn’t have plaeyd if i knew i’d have 35%, that’s bullshit”

Dean: isn’t it more fun if I just say I didn’t want 25% and then flat out refuse to pay anything

me: then you respond somewhat more inflammatory like “i wouldn’t

ven take you HU against zigmund at 10/20 worth, he’s not a good spot, blah blah blah”

nah, not as credible

my line we still make it a total shit show by the time they wake up

and my final response is something like “i told you i wanted 0% you till gave me a quarter at 100-200 a few months back, i paid. stop being a bitch about this, it sucks but it’s the natur of the beast when we’re sharing action these thigns happen”

blah blah blah

Dean: oh man the final hh

is LOL

AT THIS POINT I SEND THE EMAIL TELLING HIM HE OWES ME 20K

me: reply like “i don’t think you get it, i shouldn’t have to pay anything.  i’ll pay 15% because that’s what i said i would be in for maximum with Emil, but no way i’m paying 25% when i’m downswinging like crazy and explicitly said not to give me 25/50 worth vs good players AND THAT WAS EVEN WITH JAY AND EMIL PLAYING”

Dean: lol

AT THIS POINT I SEND OUT THE EMAIL SAYING “GIVE ME A GOOD REASON WHY I HAD TO PAY WHEN YOU GAVE ME ACTION” or whatever

me: so your response is “you want a good reason? how about the fact that I don’t think you’re a favorite vs zig, you should know that, and you donked off 4 stacks.  if you’re playing like you did with that AT hand you’re not someone i want to buy a piece of”

Here are the emails CC’d to Krantz and Whitelime

Dean:

Dude wtf? I specifically told Emil I didn’t want 25% v Ziigmund. I
don’t even think he’s that good a spot, especially with you playing.

Me:

are you fucking serious?  zig is fucking awful.  emil didn’t tell me you don’t want 25%.  i assume you were awake when i sent the email, you should’ve said something.  anyway, i forgot to tally it up.  it’s $20,900 each.

Dean:

I don’t think you get it, I shouldn’t have to pay anything.  I’ll pay
5% just because I don’t want to be a dick, but no way I’m paying 25%
when I’m downswinging like crazy and explicitly said not to give me
25/50 worth vs good players AND THAT WAS EVEN WITH JAY AND EMIL
PLAYING

Me:

Is this for real?  A quarter of 100/200 isn’t exactly my normal stakes Dean, and now you want me to have been unknowingly playing with a third of myself?  Remember when I also EXPLICITLY told you I wanted ZERO FUCKING PERCENT of all action in that email you sent and the next day you told me you’d given me 25/50 worth of your action and I owed you money?  I sucked it up and paid.  It wasn’t much money, but it’s the principle: shit happens when we’re always selling action like this on the fly with no confirmation, but you’d have taken 25% of the profit so you should eat 25% of the loss.  Is it really worth fucking me here for 8k?

I mean, honestly try convincing me why I should have had to pay you that $1400 but you shouldn’t have to pay me 25%.  Because the numbers are bigger?  That’s obviously a bullshit reason. Come up with something to convince me and we’ll figure something out, but I’m skeptical right now.

Dean:

r u serious? you want a good reason? how about the fact that I don’t
think you’re a favorite vs ziig?, you should know that, and you donked
off 4 stacks. If you’re playing like you did with that AT hand you’re
not someone i want to buy a piece of. How can you be so reckless with
other people money, is this all some kind of massive fucking joke to
you?
me:

wow.  seriously dean, fuck yourself.  do whatever you want , pay what you think you owe, but i’m done with this argument and i’m done iwth you.

So I think we sold the enmity really well, and I’m just imagining Krantz and Whitelime reading this whole thing, tilted about losing 21k, and now caught in the middle of a friendship-destroying dramabomb.

Whitelime hits me up on IM

Emil (11:15:09 AM): whatup

Me(11:15:46 AM): check your email

Me (11:19:49 AM): 3

Me (11:19:53 AM): hahaha

Me (11:19:55 AM): don’t tell jay

I told Jay over the phone and recorded the conversation: if I can figure out where the audio is and how to get it online I will do so.  But basically he had just woken up, was non-responsive and obviously upset and then when I told them the truth he just kept saying “what? what? you’re crazy. that’s crazy.  what?”

Maybe a bit mean to put my friends through this, but I think it was pretty hilarious imagining them reading the emails and trying to make sense of this.   I know this was a bit tl;dr but I put so much time into doctoring the HH’s that I thought I’d share with you guys the fruits of my labor.

Playing my roommate AG a HU battleship match on 2 tables, with some open tables to catch some fish. This guy sits in at my 50/100 table with 4k and AG asks me if I’m going to sell off action, which I would normally do if playing higher than 25/50. I tell him “nah, I can play for 4k, no problem.” He goes up 1k on me and then, bam!:

Also, to everybody giving me great reviews of my videos on Deucescracked: it means a lot to me. Honestly, so often in poker a player is all about getting his and doesn’t get a chance to improve other people’s lives. Knowing that I’m making videos that are helping people beat their stakes is very rewarding. And yes, I know that I’m helping people take other people’s money, but it’s still a nice feeling. I was very unhappy with my first video for my season 2 series “Moving On Up” because I’m not used to making videos and was worried I wasn’t explaining myself well. But I didn’t have time to redo it before deadline so sent it to the editors and let them make the call whether to show it or make me redo it. Then everybody loved it and the rest of the series has been getting great reviews, so I’m definitely feeling very good about my involvement with Deucescracked. When you put your thoughts out there for everybody to nitpick and critique you often open yourself up to get knocked down. I was worried that people would mythologize high-stakes poker players as just always knowing exactly what to do and having great insight all the time when really there are always confusing spots and misplayed hands (unless you’re MDMA or flawless_victory). Really glad that so far, everything’s turned out well.

So after grinding for a few hours to finish up 3k, this hand comes up:

I’d been folding to each of his 3bets and couldn’t believe he called it off, even though I knew he was awful.  It just doesn’t seem right that he gets to win that one.  Jayden then immediately hits and runs me and aejones sits in at my table because he was on the waiting list.  I ask him if he’ll flip for 1290, my profit on the day, and we do and his A7 beats my K7.  At this point I’ve been sitting on my ass all day and have 0 profit to show for it, so I ask him to flip me for 1k.  At first he balks but I wear him down and he agrees to do 3 flips for 1k on 3 tables simultaneously. Since I only lose when coin-flipping out of boredom and never lose when I’m just tilted, I obviously expect to win.

He pushes 3 tables, i try catching a screen shot of the all-ins, pasting them into paint, and getting another screen shot of the final showdown for my loyal readers, but I can’t quite keep up with FTP, miss both screen shots, and the next thing I know aejones somehow won all 3.  I don’t even know what we each had, it was such a blur.  But now I’m down 3k.  Anyone wanna flip?

Also, hand of the day.  The match had been playing pretty tame but I have a pretty solid read on thebryce (freedom25) in spots like these, so I was planning on stacking of if he 3bet.  Then when the turn bricked off I thought that he wouldn’t give my check/raise any credit (on a board like that it’s so easy for the BB to check/raise that some players are naturally suspicious of them) so I thought if I bet he would bluff-jam most of his floating range and some draws so I snapcalled

Let’s talk some strategy. This guy is a pretty passive player who minraises a lot preflop and doesn’t c-bet a ton.  I thought that he doesn’t bet a 3 too often on the flop and that the turn would be a bad card for him to bet if he had a 5 because he would have no value against any 5 now, I’m very likely to have hit the 3 because my calling range is going to have more 3s in it than his flop betting range (even if he’s opening more 3x hands than I’m defending), and he’s only getting called by better hands or tying hands while exposing himself to a check/raise.  So I decided that when he bet the river he was almost definitely either bluffing (in which case jamming and calling are the same EV because he never calls and I always just win his river bet) or value betting me with a better K.  I decided to defend against the times he has a better K by c/r bluffing him off of it since I can easily rep a 5 or a 3 (more a 5 than anything else, obviously) and he’d be hard pressed to come up with hands that get to the river by me that are now bluffing (I muck A4/A2 on the turn, probably check/raise 46 on the flop or fold it on the turn), so if he’s at all thinking he should realize he’s only good if I”m turning a worse K into a bluff. He tanked to the last second and folded.  Turning top pair into a bluff HU 101:

I don’t know how you people with jobs manage to find time to run errands and take care of anything involving customer service. 2 days ago I waited in line for an hour at the post office to pick up a package that they didn’t have, so I had to come back the next day. When I waited in line for another hour, the package full of stuff I left at home when I moved to NYC had everything but my electric toothbrush, which was about the only thing I actually needed. So that was a failure, but at least have all my CDs which I have no use for and nowhere to put them.

Then a week ago I ordered replacement cables and a replacement power cord for my 30″ monitor because I lost them. When I got the parts, the power cord was missing the half that connects to my monitor, so I called Dell. I got sent from Spare Parts to Technical Support to Sales to Customer Service and after two hours I was setting up a return to get the whole cord when I got disconnected. Next day I call and after a long time am told that I can’t actually return it (even though I spent 2 hours being told otherwise) because I only paid for the cord, and need to also purchase the a/c adapter. Apparently when you order a power cord nobody at Dell bothers mentioning to you that you’re not buying the whole cord. So I get transferred to sales and try buying the adapter but he guy says he’s going to call the warehouse to see if it’s in stock and call me back, never hear back. I really think from now on every time I call customer service anywhere I’m going to start off by asking for a name so that eventually when I snap and scream at a manager I can tell him exactly who’s to blame for my rage before he does absolutely nothing about it.

Today I call again, for the fourth time about this stupid cord, it’s not in stock, and they’ll call me when it is. I’m sure this is going to end up in me calling back in a week when I’ve heard nothing back from them.

So now my monitor’s still not working, I don’t have an electric toothbrush, I’ve wasted hours of my time, and I’m only up 10k for my two hour morning session. So life tilted.

Lost 20k early on in the day at 25/50, made it all back at 10/20.  I was 1-tabling HU while catching up on some Google reader and falling asleep at the wheel pretty much and was just about to quit when this hand came up:

Can’t imagine a better bail-out turns to cold-deck.  So now I’m thinking “wow, don’t want to quit this guy, he might be tilted and it would be rude” but fortunately he types in a “gg” and leaves.

As I’m typing this, 2nd hand vs a shortstacker:

And he insta leaves.  Bothersome to say the least but given my luck freeroll on the backdoor cold-deck I can’t really complain.  Still wishing endless misery to all hit and runners though.

I put in my 10k hands. Really no super long sessions, although I do need to start taking notes so I can remember my sickest hands. Apparently I play absolutely insane. I say this because whitelime came over and sweated me for a bit while we were getting ready to go to a business meeting. He was on the phone and watching me play and after about 5 minutes of talking, he hangs up and says “Wow, you do some crazy shit!” I had no idea what he was talking about as I was playing my standard game, which is way tamer than it used to be. It’s weird, because I never played tight (except for my earliest days of nitting it up at Foxwoods playing with my whole roll on the table) so I just have no normal frame of reference. I’m just doing ridiculous stuff all over the place and because I’m not bluff 4betting constantly or check/raise bluffing rivers as often as I want to I just assume I’m playing tame but I guess not.

Anyway, I’ll see if I can’t remember some hands that will entertain you guys, but for now here’s my screen shot. As I posted earlier, I lost 33k or so my first 2k hands so the last 9k hands have been pretty good to me.

week stretch

Played some 25/50 today.  Lost 34k.  23k below my equity on all-ins.  Time to lick my wounds at 10/20 and 5/10 I guess.  Sigh.
